Many application will allow you to zoom in and out by holding down the Ctrl key and moving the wheel. Office applications like Excel, Word, .pdf file, and also some graphics programs support this function. Most web browsers will increase and decrease the text size when you do this.

If your mouse does not have a scroll wheel, you can do it by Holding down the Ctrl key and pressing "-" or "+" keys.
