How to change windows file associations?

When you double-click a file to open it, Windows XP examines the file name extension. If Windows XP recognizes the file name extension, it opens the file in the program that is associated with that file name extension.

However, you can change the program that is associated with recognized file name extensions so that Windows XP opens all files that have this extension in the new associated program. The following describes how to change or select which program starts when you double-click a file in Windows.

1. Right-click on a file of the type you want to change.

2. Click on "Properties"

3. Click "Open With" and click "Choose Program"

4. Select the program you want to use from the list.

5. If you want to permanently change it, click the check box "Always use selected program to open this kind of file".

6. Click OK twice.

7. Now double-click any file of the same type (same file extension) and it should open in the program that you selected.

8. Repeat for other file types you would like to re-associate.
